A group of 28 Indian athletes, consisting of both men and women, have departed for Dhaka to partake in the Special Olympics South Asia Unified seven-a-side football tournament. Led by five coaches, the contingent hails from eight different states and was bid farewell in Faridabad. Harpreet Singh, the sports director of Special Olympics Bharat, expressed confidence in the female team, stating that they are poised to secure a medal. However, he noted that the men’s team needs to enhance their skills, particularly in defense. Despite the challenges, the team remains optimistic and aims to perform at their best in the upcoming tournament.
Special Olympics Bharat serves as the National Sports Federation for individuals with intellectual disabilities and is officially recognized by the sports ministry. Intellectual disability is defined by below-average intellectual functioning coupled with difficulties in daily tasks and social interactions. The athletes have dedicated themselves to rigorous training sessions to hone their skills and prepare for the tough competition ahead, which includes teams from Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Maldives.
Ankita, the captain of the women’s football team, shared her experience with Special Olympics Bharat, expressing how the organization has positively impacted her. She emphasized her desire to make her country and parents proud by giving her all on the field. With each training camp, the team has showcased progress and development in their abilities, fueling their determination to strive for the gold medal.
