Film The Big Blue (1989)

The 1989 film “The Big Blue” is a romantic fantasy-adventure about two friends, Jacques and Enzo, who share a passion for free diving. Jacques has a unique ability to adjust his vital signs in the water like a dolphin.

Enzo persuades Jacques to compete in a free diving contest where Jacques meets Johanna, an American insurance investigator. The film deals with Jacques having to choose between his love for Johanna and his love for the sea. It originally ran 132 minutes in French, trimmed to 118 minutes for the US.

Despite moderate success in the US, “The Big Blue” was a hit in Europe. Director Luc Besson released an extended 168-minute version in 1998. It is categorized as drama, romance, action, adventure film with a PG rating.
