Jane Campion, a pioneering filmmaker, will receive the Golden Pard Award at the Locarno Festival in Switzerland. The festival focuses on independent cinema, and Campion from New Zealand will be honored for her impactful contributions.
The prestigious award ceremony will take place on August 16 at the festival’s grand Piazza Grande, which seats 8,000 people. Campion will also participate in an on-stage conversation the next day.
The festival will screen Campion’s acclaimed films “An Angel at My Table” and “The Piano” in a new 4K restoration as part of the tribute to her remarkable career.
Campion’s achievements include being the first woman to win the Cannes Palme d’Or, receiving multiple Academy Award nominations and wins, and being a trailblazer for New Zealand filmmakers on the international stage.
Locarno’s artistic director praised Campion for her ability to maintain artistic complexity while engaging with audiences and the film industry, all without compromising her unique artistic vision and ambitious storytelling.
The Locarno Festival has a history of honoring renowned filmmakers such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Ken Loach, Jean-Luc Godard, and Agnès Varda. This year’s festival will take place from August 7 to 17, showcasing diverse and groundbreaking films from around the world.
